Recruitment Meeting disrupted in Roscommon

A recruitment meeting in Roscommon was disrupted by Sinn Fein activists until they were dispersed by a baton charge by the 6 policemen in attendance. One Sinn Fein protestor shouted,”We do not want German rule or English rule; we want rule by Irishmen”, to which Major Davey, the recruiter, retorted,”…do not submit to a policy founded by a Welshman and led by a Spaniard”¹.Read More →

Caltra arrests

Two Caltra men have been arrested at their homes.  Michael Kelly and Thomas Divine are charged with unlawful assembly and will be tried at the next Petty Sessions Court in Mountbellew in Co. Galway. They had been “on the run” for some time.  Read More →

Hurling treated as a crime in Loughrea

Three men were charged today with playing hurling in Loughrea on July 21st last¹. The prosecutors claimed that the arrests were valid (under Lord French’s proclamation) and that the defendants had been shouting “Up De Valera”. Verdicts for the three accused – Joseph Connor, Joseph Ford and Tadhg Scorry – was adjourned to the next itting of the Loughrea Petty Sessions.Read More →

Large police presence prevent Sinn Fein meeting in Ballyhaunis

The Western People reports¹ that policemen from the districts of Westport, Castlebar, Balla, Claremorris, Kiltimagh, Swinford, Ballindine, Castlerea and Ballinlough were sent to Ballyhaunis today (Lady’s Day) to prevent an announced Sinn Fein meeting in the Market Square . It was reported that the nationalists held their meeting in Cloonfarna ( 2 miles away) instead.Read More →

Sinn Féin Activist arrested in Eyrecourt

A member of the Clonfert Sinn Fein Club, Timothy P Kileen, was arrested by police¹ in Eyrecourt for seditious language after a camogie match. He was arrested by Constable French and delivered to the military authorities in Galway.Read More →

The Belfast Telegraph reports¹ that a large force of Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) and military raided homes in Ballinakill and Abbey looking for weapons and contraband. It reports that 40 guns were sized, as well as £200 in silver.Read More →
