Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin condemns idea of conscription in Ireland

Who can tell [..] what may happen if the Government permit itself to be deluded by some evil genius into the idea that it can enforce conscription on Ireland… …But should rulers act rashly or arbitrarily, the teaching of the Church did not allow subjects to rise against them of their own authority. F E Smith Interview in Boston Post

The Freeman’s Journal¹ reports on an interview given by Frederick Edwin Smith to the Boston Post on January 14th, while in the United States. He is quoted in the newspaper :- Nothing ever me greater delight than the execution of the traitor Casement As Attorney General for the British government, he led the case for treason against Roger Casement in 1916. In the same interview he states:- It would be unwise at this time to try to enforce conscription in Ireland  since, unquestionably, it would precipitate riots.  Read More →

Escape of Cattle Drive prisoners

The twenty men detained while participating in a cattle drive yesterday all escaped when brought to court in Ennis today¹. A melee ensued between the prisoners, supporters and the police, and in the commotion, the prisoners escaped. A subsequent round-up operation by the police and army yielded no results.Read More →

Shots were fired through the window of the home of Michael Nolan this evening – there were no injuries. Nolan, from Cummer in Galway, is one of 16 tenants on the Lord Knox estate and there is reportedly a dispute of the leases amongst the tenants¹.Read More →

Galway landlord complains of boycott

J G Alcorn, who survived a shooting attack last month, writes to the Tuam Herald¹ to complain that he had not tried to evict a tenant, as was previously reported. He  tells of notices posted in his locality, attributed to Sinn Fein, threatening anyone who works with him.
